Determinants of Attainment of UHC in Kenya

Image
There is a concerted effort by the Government to propel Kenya towards attaining Universal Health Coverage (UHC). This drive is backed by both legal and institutional fundamentals of Kenya and international Bodies. The Kenyan Constitution, for example, has fully adopted the World Health Organisation definition of UHC and the Government is running with it to ensure that all citizens receive the health services they need (prevention, promotion, treatment, rehabilitation and palliative care) without suffering financial hardship. the journey to achieving healthcare for all started many decades ago. It was in the heart of the government of the first president of Kenya, the late Mzee Jomo Kenyatta to kick disease and illiteracy from the country. He introduced several programmes that were aimed at making this a reality. This trend has continued to the date where healthcare is considered as one of the 4 pillars of the “Big 4 Agenda” of the current government. Between the two governments, ...

Partnerships to Combat the Impacts of COVID 19 on Universal Healthcare Coverage (UHC) in Kenya

Image
Most countries in the Eastern and Southern Africa sub region, Kenyan included have integrated UHC as a goal in their national health strategies. Whereas there is notable commitment in translating these strategies into an equitable and quality health service delivery, there is still much to be done to ensure increased financial protection and access to services. The low investment in health, inadequate and inequitably distributed human resources for health, fragmented health information systems, weak infrastructure and medicines stock-outs are hurdles to overcome. Unfortunately, the determination to achieve UHC by 2030 has been threatened by the outbreak of the COVID-19 and  pandemic in 2020. The devastations on the economic and social pillars of the society were almost unbearable for the greater part of the past 2 years. In 2022, the government and its people have been putting in place parameters for recovery of the sectors and the social fibre as we know it. Indeed, the g...

Driving Healthcare Equity Through Partnerships

Image
Widely, healthcare equity is always an issue for discussion amongst the healthcare providers. It is defined as the absence of systematic disparities in health between social groups who have different levels of underlying social advantage/disadvantage in a social hierarchy. In discussing equity, the policy drivers are always concerned that many people assume that equity and equality are one and the same thing, bringing great confusion and a feeling of entitlement for all things. Equity seeks to ensure that there is just accessibility to healthcare services without anyone being subjected to financial hardship. Where there is healthcare equity, the social class of an individual does not expose them to the risk of not receiving the optimal health services being provided, nor vulnerability. It has been found out that just because a health facility offers high quality services does not necessarily provide equitable solutions. In many instances globally, it has been found that the con...

How Partnerships Can Drive Health Equity? Answered by Mr. Jayesh Saini

Widely, healthcare equity is always an issue for discussion amongst the healthcare providers. It is defined as the absence of systematic disparities in health between social groups who have different levels of underlying social advantage/disadvantage that is, different positions in a social hierarchy. Depending on the social class of an individual, they are put at a risk of not receiving the optimal health services being provided, bringing out the issue of vulnerability.   In rare cases will the facilities offering top quality services be the ones that also ensure equity, mostly it’s the vice versa. And since this is a problem that is cutting across most countries, it has necessitated changes and strategic plans to address factors that are hindering equity in healthcare. A range of approaches have and are still being negotiated and implemented in order to address the issue. Amongst them is creation of a favorable environment that will help foster equity-driven partnerships amon...

Proper Medical Records and Coding in Billing and Claims Processing

Image
The world is more and more becoming digitalized and manual records of most things are becoming obsolete, and healthcare has not been left behind in this change. With the drive and focus towards attaining UHC comes an increased amount of data to be gathered, to ensure that entire populations data in a country are captured in the systems for easy management of the UHC, mainly being spearheaded by governments. Biodata is the least of the problems, compared to data required for billing and claims processing. The higher the population, the greater the risk of fraudulent practices and errors that would expose service providers to liability investigations, with instances of being barred from providing services while investigations are going on.   To avoid such scenarios, Jayesh Saini, a notable name in the healthcare industry, suggests that there be a sure way of collection of data once a patient enters the health facility. The information should me stored in the patient’s med...

Game Changer in Healthcare Services Delivery

Image
Majority of people believe that health services should be offered in a fixed/static building. This notion is ingrained because that is what people have grown up knowing and seeing. The mention of mobile health clinics invokes various emotions dependent on the people groups; for those in urban areas where there are clinics and hospitals, it would be a raw deal to be told to access services in a mobile clinic while to one in a remote place with no facilities, a mobile clinic would be a Godsent.   A mobile health clinic is a vehicle e.g.  a bus, trailer or container that is innovatively modified and equipped with facilities and medical personnel needed to provide certain health services. The services and medical personnel are dependent on factors such as the size of the clinic and the target population. Services available can include doctor consultation, laboratory, pharmacy, and triage.   Commenting on the use of mobile health clinics, Jayesh Saini stated t...
